Austin Zoo

Standard

This past Saturday we headed to the Austin Zoo & Animal Sanctuary.  Almost all the animals have been rescued.  One of the lions was found in horrible condition in a junkyard in Arkansas.  Several of the reptiles were found in abandoned apartments and duplexes.  Other animals like the wolf hybrids were purchased as pets, but then the owners realized owning a wolf wasn’t what they thought it would be and surrendered the animals to the zoo.  A set of foxes was seized by immigration when someone ordered them online from Russia.

Anyway, the zoo isn’t too far from our house and is just the right size for a 2.5 year old.  We had quite a lot of fun.

You can buy food to feed several of the animals. We didn't buy any food this time because we weren't sure how Baby Boy would do. He wasn't a big fan of the petting zoo part the last time we went to this zoo. The animals are very used to be fed by visitors. Another visitor kindly gave Baby Boy 3 pellets to feed to the goat. He did great with the first one, but then the other 2 kept ending up on the ground and Baby Boy lost interest.

His current favorite exhibit by far. His interest in snakes probably has something to do with my poor play-doh skills. I can make a really great snowman and an even better snake.

And no zoo trip is complete without a train ride.

We headed to Chipotle for lunch after two goats started getting a bit PG-13.  After nap time, our friend Liz stopped by on her way thru Austin.  We found a new restaurant to try and then had an even better discovery at a bookstore.
